Did You Know?

The first film holds the record for the fifth biggest box office opening day ever - it took a whopping $68.3 million, with almost $20 million of that coming from special midnight showings.

Whilst filming, the crew’s anthem was Ne-Yo’s Tonight.

Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t chosen for the role of Katniss straight away - in fact a whole host of stars also auditioned, including Chloe Grace Moretz, Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld. Even Isabelle Fuhram tried out for the part - she was good, but being too young she was instead offered the role of Clove.

Jennifer Lawrence has starred in two movies that have involved her surviving by catching and killing squirrels - as well as in The Hunger Games she also does this in Winter’s Bone!

On the first night, some of the tributes that had died strangely don’t show up in the sky.

Katniss is an aquatic plant species from the genus Sagittaria. Sagittaria’s name derives from the Latin word Sagitta meaning ‘an arrow’. The unusual name Katniss was therefore chosen as a reference to the character’s excellent archery skills.

If you were to add up all the Tributes from every single one of the 75 Hunger Games, you will find that 1746 people in total died.

According to Suzanne Collins, the idea for the books came from an evening when she was channel hopping and flicked between a challenge-based reality show to a documentary about the war in Iraq. Collins says that in her head the two ideas merged and The Hunger Games was born.

One pretty easy filming location to visit is the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel - the venue’s conference room is where many of the scenes in the Capitol were filmed!

If you’re looking for sunnier climes however, you may want to take a trip to Hawaii - as that’s where the arena scenes were mostly shot.
